Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1.5 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • whisk

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and whisk in the flour. Cook 1 minute.
  2. Slowly whisk in the milk and simmer until slightly thickened.
  3. Reduce the heat and stir in the cheddar, garlic powder, cumin, cayenne, and salt until smooth.
  4. Thin with a splash more milk if needed for a pourable consistency. Serve warm.

Notes

A little cornstarch or a roux keeps the sauce smooth and pourable, just like the machine dispensed version. Do not boil after adding the cheese.
