Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes some skins on
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk warm
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Equipment

  • Pot
  • Potato masher

Method

  1. Cut the potatoes into chunks, leaving skins on about half. Boil in salted water until fork-tender.
  2. Drain and return to the pot.
  3. Add the butter, warm milk, sour cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Mash to a creamy but slightly rustic texture.
  5. Taste, adjust seasoning, and serve hot with extra butter.

Notes

Leave the skins on some of the potatoes for the signature rustic, homestyle texture. Warm the milk and butter so the potatoes stay hot and creamy.
